I've been using two radios for all of the 1990s in HF and VHF contests. After all, the CT user interface is really nice in my opinion, and TR is very different. When TR came along I had no real reason to switch-for a while. I started computer-logging using CT in the late 1980s and loved it. My particular brand of contesting is two-radio single-op, mostly on HF CW, although I use a K1EA DVP for SSB contests as well. Thank God for my laptop!īest program, best support, best features The ONLY time I EVER use anything else is when I am a guest and have to be polite, or part of a multi-op where other ops or the owner have not seen The Light.

Still, if reaching your full potential is your goal, you should try it. Yes, it is harder to use for some people than other programs, because other programs are more like database software, while TRlog is a contest operating SYSTEM. SUMMARY: When you add up the keystrokes, TRlog is the most efficient contest operating package you can get. These are not the only things TRlog has going for it - I point them out as good examples of the program's superiority. THIRD: TRlog is the only program which understands the difference between calling CQ and Searching and Pouncing. SECOND: TRlog is smart enough to know where you are in the steps of making a contest QSO and sends context-sensitive messages other programs basically act like a programmable keyer. Other programs require you to move your cursor to each field to fill it in, in order. FIRST: TRlog is smart enough to figure out what you are telling it. Here are a couple examples of the differences between TRlog and any other program. Some people prefer the plush ride of a Chevrolet, but the race car will get across the line first. This is a good analogy (except that the software support for it is more like an Indy crew). TRlog has for years been likened to a Formula One race car. If this is not your goal then maybe TRlog is not for you. I have operated contests using a computer since 1986, and nothing beats TRlog if your goal is to maximize your potential. TRlog is serious software for serious contest operators. The various export formats are useful and make electronic log submission to CQ and ARRL a breeze. By the end of the contest, there was no need.

For my first contest, I made a cheat sheet of commands that I thought I might need to use. All of the information is extremely useful and completely legible on a B&W LCD display (told you it was an old laptop). The user interface being DOS is not as sexy as windows.

The printed manual arrived about a week later. I've used it in a couple of other contests now and the flexibility is phenomenal! The manual is available on-line in Portable Document Format (PDF) which is what I used to get setup. (They can e-mail it to you which is what I did to expedite delivery) While not a serious contender, It was a lot of fun, and EASY to get going. I received my copy just a couple of days before the CQWW.

As I upgrade the station, I'm certain the program will more than keep up with me. I can use an old 486/25 laptop to contest with in my limited space operating setup. I have not used other contesting software so I can't provide any comparative information. This is a great program that makes contesting fun. I chose this program based on the reviews I read here and elsewhere.
